Piercing has been around for generations, but mostly throughout the different cultures over the world and in the more undeveloped countries where natives have pierced their lips, nose or ears sometimes as an adornment and at other times to denote their tribe.
But in the more developed countries, apart from the piercing that was performed on ears to enable ear-rings to be worn without getting lost or falling out, no other was ever thought of until about 10 years ago when it became all the rage amongst the young to pierce different parts of their bodies other than their ears.

It more or less began with the piercing of the nose and then progressed on to be even more adventurous by piercing lips, eyebrows, nipples and tongue just to name but a few places on the body where piercing is now performed.
If it is not done by a professional it can lead to problems of infections and so it is always best, if you want to get it done, to choose a place that has a good reputation. For some people it hurts quite a bit and for others not at all, because of course pain is very personal with each person having a different limit on their pain threshold. But for the majority of people it is only a few seconds of very minor pain.
So yes, piercing is still in fashion and will most probably stay with us for good. It might be that when some of the youngsters, that are having it done today, get a little older, they might just decide to take out the adornment and let their pierce, as it were, close up on its own, which they do, but then when they have their own children these will no doubt want to have a piercing done as well.
